Leading from the front with slow steps as the South African Community in Doha launches Walking Football.
The South African Walking Football Club (SAWFC) was officially launched at an auspicious occasion last night at the Aspire Mini Football Fields. SAWFC is under the patronage of HE Ambassador Faizel Moosa of South Africa to Qatar, and the affiliation of International Walking Football Federation Qatar (IWFFQ). HE Ambassador Faizel Moosa, and his wife Mrs. Anika Moosa were the honoured guests at the launch. Also, present, were the president of the IWWF for Asia and Qatar, Mr Farhan Al Sheik Al Sayed and Vice-president of IWFFQ, Mr Derrick Smith. SAWFC Chairperson, Jaceline McLean, presented the Ambassador with a plaque as a token of appreciation. Both His Excellency and IWFFQ president were presented with SAWFC team jerseys, which donned the emblems of the IWFFQ and the SAWFC.
The formalities were followed by gentlemen and ladies exhibition matches against the IWFFQ Doha gentlemen (40 years and above) and Ladies team (40 years and above), where HE Ambassador Moosa, President and Vice-president (IWFFQ) participated. The gentlemen’s exhibition match was opened with a kick-off by HE Ambassador Moosa. During the lady’s match, Mrs Moosa opened the ladies match with a goal kick.
The evening ended off with some South African delicacies like koeksisters, biltong and dried-wors which tantalized the taste buds.
International Walking Football Federation Qatar (IWFFQ) has generated loads of interest and has grown in popularity as many communities in Qatar have registered their teams for the upcoming first-ever IWFFQ league starting in November, pending the approval from the Health and Sports authorities.
